The owners wanted to replace four fishing huts that had become too damaged to save. The planning rules allowed new buildings only within the old footprints and heights, which turned out to be a good brief: small, simple volumes that sit together as a group.

Each cabin has one main room with a window towards the mountain and a smaller window towards the water. The stilts are galvanised steel inside timber casings, so they can be inspected and replaced from a boat without touching the cabins.

We used traditional red and ochre paint, but on modern, well-insulated walls. The cabins are rented all year, including the dark months, when the harbour is at its quietest.
